Peter was born and bred in Bangor and has lived all his life there. Educated at Ballyholme Primary, Bangor Grammar and Queens University Belfast, he worked as a Barrister before becoming a full time public representative. Peter was a member of the Northern Ireland Forum from 1996-8, and since 1998 has been an MLA for North Down. He represents Ballyholme and Groomsport on North Down Borough Council.

Peter is a member of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, a former President of the Local Government Association and the South Eastern Education and Library Board. In the Assembly he is Chair of the Audit Committee, Vice Chair of the Finance and Personnel Committee, and a member of both the Environment and Business Committees. He serves on the Board of Governors of both Ballyholme Primary and Bloomfield Road Primary. Peter is also a member of Hamilton Road Presbyterian Church and the Loyal Orders.

Peter has a keen interest in Law and Order, Finance, Planning and Education, and these are the key issues that he sees for North Down. He wants to see a safe, sustainable, prosperous place for people to live and work, with the Council delivering value for money in its rates, and building on our excellent local education system.
